The absolute most important step in betting smart and becoming a better bettor is taking some time to build and plan out your bankroll. This is a necessity. Whether you plan on starting with $100 or $100,000. This will ensure you do not lose the house while still always having money to gamble with.

An important question to ask yourself when you first planning out your bankroll is: "What amount of money would I feel comfortable losing in a years time?" If the thought of losing $10,000 in year makes you feel sick maybe you should aim a little lower. A good number for me was $1,000. I felt comfortable starting there because I could easily make that in a weeks work and it didn't make me feel queasy when I pictured losing it in a year. I decided to start seriously betting a little over 2 years ago and I don't feel like my bankroll will ever run out. Now, that has a lot to do with my staking plan, which I will go over later.

A couple smart tips on staking (amount to bet on a single bet):

- You should bet 1-5% of your overall bankroll

- Typically your bets should not exceed 2% of your bankroll
