Buy on bad news, sell on good.
Take advantage of artificially shaded* lines based on recent trends. (*adding points to a favorites line. This takes advantage of square bettor's tendencies to bet the favorite in big games.)
Ignore small sample size stats like Team A is 6-1 in their past 7 night games against divisional foes.
Contrarian philosophy recommends bettors always go against the grain, including:
betting against the public
taking teams following a loss (especially a blowout)
avoid betting teams in "must-win" games
Do not rely on handicappers who only sell their picks. They use many tricks to make it look like their percentages are better than they actually are.
Cover team names.
Bets should be based on solid data and analysis, not gut feel. Taken to an extreme, you can actually place your hand over the name of each team before placing your bet to eliminate any existing biases.
Get good at identifying and tracking sharp money.
Sharp money typically shows up as reverse line movement.
