Picking a Staking Plan

Another very important step in becoming a smarter bettor is finding a staking plan that is right for you. There are many different types of staking plans out there and you can find them with a simple Google search, but there are honestly only two plans you should worry about. These are simple benchmarks and can be tweaked to fit your wagering style.
Level Staking
The most basic and probably most common plan. This is where you stake the exact same amount for every wager, no matter the circumstances. (e.g. Your starting bankroll is $1,000 and you set the size of a betting unit at 2%. 2% of $1,000 is $20, which becomes the amount you stake on ALL wagers, every time.)
Percentage Staking
This, like Level Staking, is pretty basic and straightforward. This is where you pick a percentage and stick with it, no matter the size of your bankroll. (e.g. Your starting bankroll is $1,000 and you set the size of a betting unit at 2%. 2% of $1,000 is $20, so this becomes the amount you stake on your first wager. If it loses, your bankroll would now be $980. So for the next wager you would stake 2% of $980, making your next move a $19.60 bet.)
This is the staking plan I have used from the beginning and it has worked out well for me so far. However, I have tweaked it to fit my style. I generally make a lot of my bets all in one sitting so I will hold a betting amount static for, say, all of my MLS Playoff bets. I also, do the same thing when I am making a series of bets all based off of the same model or system. (e.g. Let's say I have my stake percentage set at 1%. If I am testing a new model in NFL and I have $980 in my bankroll before placing any bets, I will set my wager amount to $9.80 and place any subsequent bets within that system to that amount.)
The staking plan you decide to use is not the most important factor in smart betting but having the discipline to stick with it will ensure that you don't lose more than what is in your bankroll. Hopefully, over time you can tweak certain aspects to maximize your profits as well.
